Shropshire County Council
Severe winter storms lashed Shropshire, then two waves of summer floods --leaving collapsed bridges, washed-away roads, landslides, and deluged homes. Shropshire County Council's team of nine highways technicians (south), covering 1,500 miles of highway, put their personal lives on hold to keep roads clear and people safe. They rescued people and vehicles from disaster, sometimes carrying individuals through rapidly rising flood water. They dealt with hundreds of calls, delivered thousands of sandbags, and pumped water away from homes. The selfless dedication of these unsung heroes provided an excellent service to the public, and helped to avert more devastation and disruption.
